About The Bhangra School

GHG Folk Nation

is a cultural association dedicated to preserving and promoting Punjabi heritage/Culture among younger generations in Canada and beyond. Recognizing the strong presence of GHG Bhangra team members across different communities, we are excited to introduce a new platform for Punjabi youth.

Through this initiative, experienced coaches will inspire and train young dancers, fostering a renewed passion for Punjabi folk arts. Additionally, a group of skilled Dhol instructors from Punjab has been invited to teach, as many children have shown a keen interest in learning this traditional instrument. To support beginners, spacious training facilities will be provided.

GHG FOLK NATION

Arts & Cultural Society

With the growth of human awareness there developed a primitive society of tribal groups and families who consciously evolved their respective norms of social behaviour and networks. Their close proximity to Nature Gods was slowly coined as Religion. Some of the tribal groups from Central Asia were obliged to migrate elsewhere in search of better living conditions. Instantly they moved either to Iran, Afghanistan or Eastern Europe.

Major part of their agrarian population preferred to settle in the land of Sapta Sindhu. Gradually this land of seven rivers was shrinked to a land of five rivers known to the Muslim writers as Punj-Aab or Punjab. Almost all the agrarian populations chose to settle around river beds. Thus we see a long process of cultural evolution in Punjab. Consequently diverse ethnic groups were known as a mixed race: as Punjabi Nation in terms of Punjabi language and culture.

Villages of Punjab became the Epi -centres of their work culture and family ties which further evolved around their rituals and ceremonies. There developed means of their entertainment- folk dances , music and dances. Month of their harvest season known as Vaisakhi became a key point of their rejoicings as a matter of Thanks Giving to their Nature Gods.

Joint work force obliged them to work together in the fields as well as in their daily village routines. Families were extended via marriage institution resulting into joint family rituals and ceremonies.

Their men folk evolved a variety of Folk dances as Luddi , Jhoomer, Dhamal and Bhangra. Basically these were performed on different beats of their drums or Dhols made of quality woods and skins of goats or the cattle. Big Dhols are used in western and eastern Punjab these days.

Similarly their women folks organized their own means of dances on special occasions of marriages, birth ceremonies and seasonal rejoicings.

Their group dances were well known as Gidha , Sammi, Luddi ,and Dandaas. Of these Gidha was linked with weddings , Lohri and Teean.

Such Punjabi folk dances are now a global feature. Punjabis language and culture have acquired a National Identity in most of the countries abroad.

GHG Folk Nation is an ideal cultural association designed to promote Punjabi culture among up coming generations in the North American sphere of Canada and elsewhere.

Since GHG Bhangra team members have virtually emerged as a Nation in demographic terms therefore it is proposed to launch a new platform for the Punjabi youths whereby experienced coaches shall be recreating fresh and energetic spirit among them. A group of Dhol teachers from Punjab are being engaged for this purpose as younger kids are keen to learn Dhol music too. Spacious facilities will be provided to the beginners. Folk orchestra groups are also invited to join this activity at Surrey BC. Almost all the old GHG members are invited to join this association at large.
